SafeSport & MAAPP Implementation Policy
McKinney Ice Hockey Club (“MIHC”) maintains a comprehensive SafeSport & MAAPP Implementation Policy to operationalize the U.S. Center for SafeSport and USA Hockey Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP) in all club activities, both on and off the ice. This policy applies to all coaches, team staff, Board members, volunteers, players, and parents involved with MIHC programs and events.
Locker Rooms and One‑on‑One Interactions
MIHC prohibits unsupervised one‑on‑one interactions between an adult and a minor athlete in any locker room, restroom, or similar private space, except where specifically permitted by MAAPP (e.g., medical emergencies, parent/guardian presence).
- Locker rooms must be monitored by SafeSport‑compliant, background‑screened adults of the same gender identity where practicable, using “observable and interruptible” standards (doors open when appropriate, periodic walkthroughs, and no socializing by adults in locker rooms).
- One‑on‑one meetings or training sessions between an adult and a minor must be conducted in a public or semi‑public space, or in a location that is easily observable and interruptible (e.g., glass‑front office, lobby area, or on‑ice with others present).
Electronic Communications and Social Media
All electronic communications between adults and minor athletes associated with MIHC must be professional, sport‑related, and, whenever possible, include a parent/guardian or be conducted through MIHC‑approved group channels (such as Crossbar team messaging).
- Direct one‑on‑one texting, messaging, or social media contact between an adult and a minor athlete is discouraged; when necessary (e.g., travel coordination), parents/guardians should be copied or included in group threads.
- Team communications should be sent via club‑approved platforms and group distribution lists rather than personal accounts whenever feasible.
- Adults may not “friend” or follow minor athletes on personal social media accounts in a manner inconsistent with MAAPP and club guidelines, and may not post content that is harassing, sexually suggestive, or otherwise inappropriate.
Travel, Lodging, and Meetings
Team travel and lodging arrangements must follow SafeSport and MAAPP standards to minimize risk and ensure appropriate boundaries.
- Adults may not share a hotel room or other sleeping arrangement with an unrelated minor athlete, and team rooming lists must reflect this prohibition.
- When possible, team meetings or video sessions involving minors will be conducted in open or observable spaces; virtual meetings should use group formats with parent visibility and appropriate settings (no one‑on‑one video calls between adults and minors).
- When transporting athletes, MIHC strongly discourages one‑on‑one car rides between an unrelated adult and a minor; where unavoidable (e.g., emergency), parents should be informed, and the ride should be documented.
Club‑Level MAAPP Addendum and Rink‑Specific Practices
MIHC will maintain a written SafeSport & MAAPP Implementation Addendum that tailors national policies to the club’s specific environment, including the layout of local rinks, typical travel patterns, and reliance on Crossbar for communication.
- The addendum will include clear, practical examples for:
- Locker room entry/exit procedures and monitoring assignments at each home rink.
- Acceptable communication templates and do’s/don’ts for email, text, and app‑based messaging.
- Standard expectations for tournament travel (chaperone ratios, curfews, common‑area meetings instead of in‑room gatherings).
- This addendum will be reviewed at least annually or when SafeSport/MAAPP updates are issued and will be incorporated into coach/manager meetings, team parent meetings, and new‑Board orientation.
